This is a follow up from the last video to give it more perspective.

A Soldier's Life is a well-made video that has some very useful information on the realities of military enlistment. Often when people see something like this they think of how it could be shown in schools to provide an effective antidote to military recruitment propaganda. The video does, in fact, contain many of the components needed for that, but I would instead recommend the more developed, 14-minute Before You Enlist video (also in Spanish). For one thing, while the veteran's story in A Soldier's Life is a very powerful one, the reality is that the testimonial of a single, white, male veteran isn't likely to resonate as well in today's classrooms as testimonials from a more diverse group of vets. Also, many potential recruits are convinced that their experience will be different than what is portrayed in A Soldier's Life if they just go into a branch other than the Army, or even if they join a reserve unit. They need to hear more than what the video says about other branches. Having been actively involved in this issue for over 30 years, I know how a well-trained recruiter can neutralize concerns that might be triggered by some of the statements in A Soldier's Life. If we don't sufficiently challenge the credibility of recruiters, they can easily overcome such concerns by exploiting the average teenager's lack of life experience. Such a technique is made much more difficult in Before You Enlist because it includes very damaging revelations from an ex-recruiter who talks first-hand about recruiting fraud and deception. To be most effective, a counter-recruitment video needs to carefully consider the makeup of the intended audience. It also needs to anticipate what will happen when students who see it encounter recruiters afterwards. A Soldier's Life covers some of these elements well but misses others. I would say, however, that a few clips from it would make a great to contribution to the next version of Before You Enlist, but that would require groups to be more collaborative in developing such tools. One way to do that is to participate in the national counter-recruitment discussion group administered on Yahoo.com by the National Network Opposing the Militarization of Youth (nnomy.org). I hope that the groups that worked on A Soldier's Life will consider joining it to make our collective work stronger. Rick JahnkowProgram CoordinatorProject on Youth and Non-Military Opportunitieswww.projectyano.orgNNOMY Steering Committee Member __._,_.___ Posted by: ProjYANO at aol.com
